Luckily, the routine is not that rigorous.

How to Maintain and Clean Wood Flooring – 5 Most Useful Tips:

1. Clean Spills Immediately:

Accidental spills happen all the time, especially when you have children and pets at home. To prevent it from damaging or permanently staining your wooden floors, clean spills immediately. Use a slightly damp or dry cloth to wipe up any liquid spills. But avoid using wet or steam mops as it can cause more damage with time. Wood floors tend to expand and contract depending on the moisture level. So, it’s important to keep the humidity level in check and in order to avoid cupping, gapping and splitting of wood panels.

2. Identify the Right Cleaning Products:

There isn’t a hard and fast rule when it comes to choosing products for deeper cleaning. This is because different finishes require different treatments. So, it’s recommended you reach out to a wood flooring expert or a finish manufacturer to identify the right cleaning products. However, we can suggest some of the products to always avoid. Using any kind of harsh chemical on any hardwood floor. Because the chemicals applied to the finish can create hazing. This can really build up over a period of time, could be few months or a year and doesn’t look very good. Similarly, you shouldn’t use anything that say it’s going to shine, rejuvenate or polish the wood floor. It can make your flooring look pretty for a shorter period of time but it’s not designed to wear.

3. Use Furniture Pads:

Scratches and dents are some of the most common as well as toughest problems to solve in wood floors. Some scratches and dents are inevitable, but you can always prevent few from happening. One of the best ways to do so is by adding furniture pads to the legs of your sofa, chair, tables etc. It will definitely help you in maintaining the look of your wood floor, especially while selling a property with hardwood flooring.

4. Preventing Dirt and Damage:

Dust from everywhere and can settle into the grain or between the floor boards. Similarly, if you have pets around the house who never stops shedding, then consider it a hygiene issue too. You can use a vacuum cleaner with a tightly squeezed mop to clean dirt. You can schedule a routine cleaning of your wood floor once a week to remove dust/dirt from tough to reach areas of your home.

5. Recoat before it’s too Late:

A recoat doesn’t involve sanding but applying another coat of finish on the top of the wood floor. We recommend you to step in and recoat when the floor starts to wear down. It’s an important aspect of maintaining your wood floor and to bring back the luster and life of that finish. If you are able to do so before it’s too late, you don’t have to go through the sanding process.
