Wooden flooring for period properties

Wooden flooring for period properties

When decorating a period properties authenticity is crucial.  Here are some characteristics to look out for when choosing wooden flooring for period properties.

Wide boards

Hundreds of years ago, trees were older and larger when cut so planks tended to be wider.  Nowadays an average board width is around 120mm.  We offer flooring at 189mm wide which is reminiscent of the look in bygone years when mature trees were plentiful.

Oiled timber

Oiled floors have existed for centuries. The oil penetrates the wood fibres, hardening them without altering the natural beauty of the wood.  This is very different in appearance to modern lacquer which a highly visible surface film.

Hand scraped

Before machinery was invented, craftsmen of course scraped wooden flooring by hand. We offer handscraped wooden floors for a truly authentic look.  This slightly irregular, rustic appearance is a contrast to the precision cuts achievable with today’s machine sanders.

Traditional grade

Selecting this grade of timber will give you the most in terms of character. Planks will contain knots, burrs, colour variation, natural mineral streaks and trace elements from the tree’s origin.  This will give your space distinction and character.

Staining

Stained floors were popular in Georgian and Victorian times.  Before the availability of machinery, flooring was hand crafted.  Soft wood such as pine tended to be used as it was easier to work with.  This was then stained to look like hard wood.

Smoked effect

Smoking darkens the appearance of wood for a worn, antique look.  It enhances the natural properties of the wood and the hand finished details of the flooring.
